My letter to UPPER BERN TOWNSHIP about the recent ICE warehouses.
Dear County Commissioners, Township Supervisors, and Elected Representatives:
I am writing as a resident of Berks County to express my deep disgust and absolute opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) using warehouse facilities in our county for detention or related operations. I am asking you, in the strongest possible terms, to deny any permits, approvals, or cooperation that would allow ICE to operate such facilities here and to take every possible step to push ICE out of Berks County.
I do not want my community associated with or complicit in the expansion of the immigration detention system. ICE detention facilities around the country have been repeatedly documented as sites of abuse, neglect, family separation, and trauma for people who are often fleeing violence, persecution, or desperate conditions. Turning warehouses in our county into detention spaces degrades our community’s values, undermines trust in local institutions, and sends a chilling message to our immigrant neighbors that they are not welcome or safe.
Berks County has already lived through the shameful chapter of hosting an immigration detention facility, and many of us worked hard for years to close it. That experience should have been a turning point, demonstrating clearly that this county does not want to be part of a system that cages families and tears communities apart. Allowing ICE to repurpose local warehouses into new detention or processing sites would be a step backward and a betrayal of the community members, advocates, and faith leaders who fought to end that facility.
I am asking you to do the following:
• Publicly and unequivocally oppose any ICE detention or processing facility in Berks County.
• Deny zoning approvals, permits, or any other local authorizations needed to operate such a facility.
• Refuse to enter into contracts, agreements, or partnerships that support ICE’s use of warehouses or other properties in the county.
• Explore all legal and regulatory avenues available at the county and township level to block or severely limit ICE operations here.
• Communicate clearly to state and federal officials that Berks County does not consent to being used as a hub for immigration detention or enforcement.
As an elected official, you have both the power and the responsibility to decide what kind of community Berks County will be. I want to live in a county that values human dignity, due process, and the safety of all residents—not one that profits from or enables a detention system built on fear and dehumanization.
I expect a written response explaining your position on ICE’s use of warehouses in Berks County and detailing the specific actions you will take to oppose it. Your constituents are watching, and history will remember whether you chose to stand with vulnerable people and with your community, or with a cruel and expanding detention system.
